Student Academic Center at Gallaudet Student Academic Center at Gallaudet Student Academic Center at Gallaudet

Why a new Student Academic Center?

The cornerstone of Unite for Gallaudet is a new, technologically rich academic building that will provide Gallaudet students with a competitive edge in their experience and ability to use technology in their professional lives beyond graduation. Gallaudet is committed to helping students become more sophisticated and experienced in technology than their hearing peers. The new Student Academic Center will empower Gallaudet students to master all available means of communication in today's technology-rich world.

Gallaudet must act at this time to take advantage of our students' inherent skills in technology and increased acceptance of deaf people in almost every field and professional arena. The new Student Academic Center is critical to the University's action because: 1) it will provide Gallaudet students with advantages in skills and experience as they seek opportunities beyond graduation, and 2) it will enable students to master almost every form of advanced visual communication in use today. Your gift will serve as a permanent symbol of your long association and involvement in Gallaudet. You have our sincere thanks for your serious consideration of this request and support of the Student Academic Center.

Description of the Student Academic Center

The Student Academic Center will be linked physically and conceptually to the renovated student activities building, currently Ely Center. Together, these two buildings will create a new heart of the campus, which will connect recreation activities to formal and informal academic activities. The new Student Academic Center will be built on the site of the old Hughes Gymnasium.

Combined, the new 80,000 square foot complex will house nine technology-rich master classrooms, a multimedia theater, the Learning Technologies Department, student study lounges, a food court, an art gallery, and a chapel. In addition, it will house the Academic Advising and Career Center, the honors and the tutorial programs, faculty development, and other programs that support faculty and students in all academic departments.
